Photographer Description

General Comments
Larry DiMarzio is a musician and the inventor of the game-changing direct-replacement guitar pickup, which his company — DiMarzio, Inc. — has produced since 1972. In addition to revolutionizing the guitar industry with his pickup designs, he is also a prolific photographer, creating raw and illustrative photos of major guitar talent of the past 30 years.

Larry DiMarzio developed the revolutionary idea that you could alter the sound of the guitar by modifying the pickup — a concept that was previously unheard of. A guitarist, luthier, and amp repairman, DiMarzio experimented with rebuilding and rewiring pickups until in 1971 he discovered a way to manipulate the sound of mass-produced guitars by swapping the existing hardware for his own direct-replacement construction. He released his first such pickup, the Super Distortion model, in 1973. The company has since grown to produce almost 200 models that are distributed in over 60 countries worldwide, and the list of iconic musicians and musical works that include DiMarzio hardware continues to grow. In the hopes of enriching his flourishing, eponymous company with dynamic imagery, DiMarzio attended Parsons the New School for Design in New York in the early '80s. He immediately began applying his education to the company's advertising and marketing initiatives by photographing DiMarzio products and sponsored musicians. His dynamic, captivating portraits of these artists soon caught the attention of several magazine editors. In 1984, DiMarzio began selling his photographs to various music publications, which quickly progressed to commissioned sessions and cover shoots for such influential music magazines as Guitar World, Guitar Player, Total Guitar, and Player Magazine. As a result, some familiar names have stepped in front of DiMarzio's lens: Eddie Van Halen, Joe Perry and Brad Whitford of Aerosmith, Steve Vai, Joe Satriani, Yngwie Malmsteen, Paul Gilbert, Hugh Hefner and the women from “The Girls Next Door”, and the Playmate of the Year for 2007. Throughout the course of his career, DiMarzio has created over 30 magazine and CD covers. Perhaps as a result of DiMarzio's foray into magazines, his brand's imagery has taken on an editorial look. The company's multi-media website is emblazoned with contemporary photographs of high-end models and DiMarzio musicians, all of whom exude raw rock n' roll energy with a fashionable edge. The site's method of presenting DiMarzio subjects also alludes to the editorial nature of a magazine. Each month, DiMarzio prominently features one of these vivid portraits on the site's front page, which sees hundreds of thousands of page views. The feature's visibility thus draws parallels to that of appearing on a magazine cover—a fortuitous opportunity for company talent, and a telling statistic as to how DiMarzio's photography has enhanced and transformed the guitar hardware brand.

DiMarzio's work is evidence of an ideological evolution in rock photography, from its documentary roots to something more stylized. Although esteemed rock photographers like Jim Marshall and Rolling Stone-era Annie Leibovitz were famous for their documentary approach and candid style, the music industry was growing more insular and protected, and, as a result, photographer access to the musicians grew strict and controlled. Rock photography thus became better acquainted with the highly-composed environment of the studio. The relationship between music and photography matured, and Dimarzio is an exponent of this change. Working closely with art directors, makeup artists, and clothing designers, DiMarzio crafts meticulous portraits that exhibit a sharp, pop aesthetic with references to such diverse photographic talent as Richard Avedon and Terry Richardson. While truly meticulous and precise, DiMarzio's photos are never fussy, as the natural personality of the subject often transcends. Since the inception of his photographic career, DiMarzio has been known for his incomparable rapport with his subjects, which is fueled by a common passion for music. This bond allows him to illustrate the personality of his subjects, as it more easily induces evocative expression and demonstrative body language, which of course contributes to his astute photo compositions. His manner and style combined have proven to be popular with artists themselves; for example, after DiMarzio photographed Eddie Van Halen in 1989 for Guitar World, he was specifically requested by the guitarist on four other photo shoots. Additionally, many DiMarzio-endorsed musicians—including Steve Vai and Joe Satriani—have used DiMarzio’s photographs as their main publicity images.
