General Comments
Samuel Merrin (Sam), The Merrin Gallery holds a unique position as the world’s leading gallery for Pre-Columbian and South American ancient works of art. In addition to this particular distinction, the Merrin Gallery is one of the leading galleries of Greek, Roman, Ancient Near East and Egyptian art.

Samuel Merrin, Sam Merrin, is the owner/director of the Merrin Gallery, believes in acquiring works of the highest quality. Samuel Merrin of The Merrin Gallery acquires unique art privately and through collections. Samuel Merrin buys back collections that Edward Merrin assembled during his many years in the business. With clients that include most of the world’s major museums and several well-known private collectors, Sam Merrin and the Merrin Gallery actively seek out ancient art which stands up gracefully to the highest scrutiny, both through private transactions and public auctions.

Samuel Merrin (Sam) specializes in museum quality works of art from ancient Greece, Rome, Near East, Egypt, Mesoamerica and South America. The Merrin Gallery Inc. is recognized by international museums and collectors as being the top gallery in PreColumbian and South American art and being among the top few galleries in the world for antiquities.

Samuel Merrin (Sam) has been instrumental in creating many major collections in America and Europe. Clients include some of the leading museums of the world, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Boston Museum of Fine Arts, the Sackler Art Museum at Harvard University, the Yale University Art Gallery, the Princeton University Art Museum, the Newark Museum, the Detroit Institute of Arts, the Cincinnati Art Museum, the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, the Minneapolis Institute of Arts, the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, and the J. Paul Getty Museum, as well as the British Museum, the Louvre, Egyptian Museum in Berlin, The Staatliches Museum Agyptischer Kunst in Munich, The Barbier-Muller Museum in Geneva Switzerland, and other museums in Germany, Japan, the Netherlands and Spain.

Samuel Merrin established The Merrin Gallery, Inc. in 1999. While formally incorporated that year, it is a second generation Ancient Art business founded by Edward H. Merrin in the mid 1960’s, when he started dealing in PreColumbian art, becoming an expert in this field.  Samuel Merrin is an authority on PreColumbian and ancient art from eastern Mediterranean cultures  He is often asked and gives appraisals for indemnifying major PreColumbian and antiquities exhibitions for U.S. museums, and authenticated works for auction houses, dealers, and leading museums.

Edward Merrin's son, Samuel Merrin (Sam) formally took over the business in 1999, has been involved with ancient art his entire life.  As a child Samuel Merrin frequently visited his father’s gallery and worked there during many summer vacations. Samuel was fascinated by the beauty and history of the objects he handled. After receiving a BA from Tufts University, he worked at The Cloisters Museum and interned at The Metropolitan Museum of Art, both in New York. Samuel Merrin is a recognized expert in the authenticity and value of ancient art from antiquities to PreColumbian art, appraising ancient objects for I.A.A.A.T.A., various clients, and institutions. Samuel coordinated several major exhibitions, and published accompanying catalogues of objects for sale. Samuel Merrin has often been quoted as an expert in the Wall Street Journal, New York Times and many art magazines as well as on live television.
