General Comments

As a child in Iowa, I was fascinated with colors and shapes. I was fortunate to have the constant encouragement of my mother and later of my husband. My mother's appreciation for art was central to her life and showed up in her life, her home, and in her daughter. My own personal aesthetic is derived from the way she accessorized her home, designed her garden, and arranged everything from her table settings to her quilt blocks.

I quickly discovered that realism was not holding my interest. When painting realistically I became compelled to deviate from the subject and reduce it to simpler shapes. Abstract paintings fascinated me. At 47 I earned a degree in Design from Iowa State University.

Color and design have captivated my interest and are the primary emphasis of my work today. As I observe my surroundings, they are reduced to shapes and provide a continual fascination with the patterns and design of these shapes. My appreciation of art has turned the most banal daily activities into deeply aesthetic experiences for me.
